How Acupuncture Started

*Acupuncture first started when the Chinese made an important discovery.
They saw that soldiers who had been wounded by arrows
were sometimes cured of illnesses from which they had suffered for a long time.
It seemed that if a hole was made in the skin, and a needle placed in the hole,
then certain diseases could be cured.
But the hole had to be made in the right place and have the right depth.

The earliest acupuncture needles were made of stone.
The Chinese later used needles made of bone,
and then of different metals such as iron and silver.
Today, needles are made of steel.
The Chinese first believed that the needle itself cured the disease.
This was before they discovered that
certain points in the body are connected to parts of the body,
such as the stomach and the heart.

▶해석:
침술은 중국인들이 중요한 발견을 하였을 때 처음 시작되었다. 그들은 화살로 인해 부상을 당한 병사들이 때로 오랫동안 앓아왔던 병을 고치는 것을 보았다. 마치 피부에 구멍이 만들어지고 그 구멍에 바늘같이 생긴 것을 꽂으면 어떤 병은 치료될 수 있는 것처럼 보였다. 그러나 그 구멍은 알맞은 위치에 만들어져야 하며 그 깊이가 적당해야 했다.
초기의 침은 돌로 만들어졌다. 중국인들은 후에 뼈로 만들어진 침을 사용하다가 철이나 은과 같은 다른 금속들로 만들어진 침을 사용하였다. 오늘날 침은 강철로 만들어진다. 중국인들은 처음에 침 자체가 병을 낫게 한다고 믿었다. 이것은 나중에 그들이 신체의 특정한 곳이 위나 심장과 같은 신체부위와 연결되어 있다는 것을 발견하기 전이었다.
